Suspension and Potholes:

We would like to assist customers and all road users to outline some of tips to help you avoid limit damage of which a pothole can do your vehicle and tyres.

Potholes are everywhere and sometimes new ones creep up and there we go damaged tyres. We will need to find ways to avoid constant damages to our vehicles.

All it takes is one pothole to get the better of you, damaging both your tyres and maybe your rims.  Never the less what about the unforeseen suspension damage that might also be caused?

Here are some basic tips that might help to avoid pothole damage.

 1. Drive slower – slow down:

By driving slightly slower you’ll be able to notice potholes and a vehicle navigating around a pothole this will give you more time to react and safely navigate around a surprise pothole.

When driving through a pothole at a higher speed, you increase the damage on your vehicle.

When you are driving at a slower speed, and you hit a pothole, your car is sure to shave less damage.

2. Keep your safe following distance:

When you’re driving too close to the car in front of you, you limit your ability to notice upcoming potholes.

3. Puddles – water – don’t drive through them:

Make sure to pay attention and look out for puddles as there could be a pothole underneath all that water below.

4. Keep your hands on the steering wheel:

When disaster struck and you could not avoid a pothole and you have both hands on the wheel you will be able to maintain control of your vehicle.

5. Do not brake:

Brake before the pothole and not in the pothole. When you heat the brake pedal, your vehicle will have a downward motion onto the front of your suspension, causing the front wheels to dig into the pothole. It is best to slow down before the pothole and then drive over it.

6. Check your tyres pressure:

Tyres with the correct pressure will have more resistance when striking a pothole than an under-inflated tyre. Properly inflated tyres will give your car more protection against the damage of potholes.

7. Inspect your tyres:

Check the tread on your tyres is still at not lower than 1.6 mm. Worn tyres will not be able to sustain the extensive damage that can be caused by hitting a pothole.

New set of tyres will have roughly 8 mm of tread on the surface.

Suspension

Shock absorbers are instrumental to maintaining the integrity of your vehicle’s suspension. They are primarily designed to allow the tyres to conform to the contours of the road, dampening potential impact on roads and other terrain. Shocks provide your vehicle with stability and maneuverability, which determines a smooth, balanced ride. Shocks affect how well your car handles the road and braking. They play a vital role in providing safe, balanced reflexes and handling during emergencies.
